VERTICAL MAPPING RESOURCES PROVIDES MAPPING SERVICES FOR THE WILMINGTON REFINERY
Services provided will assist with future improvements to the plant
April 26th, 2010, San Diego, Calif. - Vertical Mapping Resources, Inc., a leading photogrammetric and geospatial land information firm with offices in both California and Arizona, was recently contracted to provide digital mapping services of Valero’s Wilmington Refinery.
 Wilmington Refinery is located in Wilmington, California on 120 acres of land, approximately 23 miles south of downtown Los Angeles. Due to this key location, it is often depicted in Hollywood movies and commercials. During the 1980’s and 90’s a large amount of construction took place with the intent of adding the capability of hydrotreating. Hydrotreating is a process used to remove pollutants like sulfur, nitrogen, metals, and condensed ring aromatics, and improve the quality of gasoline and other fuels. Wilmington is also a member of the California Air Resources Board. The California Air Resources Board, also known as (CARB) was created in 1967 as part of the Mulford-Carrell Act and is the “clean air agency” of California. The board is responsible for creating and maintaining healthy air quality, providing strategies for complying with pollution regulations, and protecting citizens from the exposure to toxins. Today, Wilmington Refinery is a key factor in the production of fuel products throughout California and employs approximately 440 individuals.
VMR was contracted to provide 1”=20’ topographic mapping and digital orthophotography of the refinery. The project included acquisition of color aerial photography for the stereoscopic feature collection of the plant’s terrain and infrastructure. VMR also produced a color orthophoto mosaic of the site with a .15’ pixel resolution.
