VERTICAL MAPPING RESOURCES COMPLETES MAPPING FOR THE SONORAN SOLAR ENERGY PROJECT
Services completed will provide basis for design and construction of the Concentrated Solar Thermal (CST) power plant.

March 11th, 2011, Scottsdale, Ariz. - Vertical Mapping Resources, Inc., a leading photogrammetric and geospatial land information firm, with offices in both California and Arizona, was contracted to provide precision topographic mapping and ortho-photography for the Sonoran Solar Energy Project, located southwest of Phoenix.

The Bureau of Land Management, Phoenix District Office, has prepared a Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) addressing potential effects of a right-of-way application for a large-scale solar energy project southwest of Phoenix area. The plan is to construct and operate an electrical generating facility, using concentrated solar thermal (CST) power on federally managed lands south of the town of Buckeye in Maricopa County, Arizona. The site is in the Little Rainbow Valley, east of State Route 85. The project would require approximately 3,700 acres.

The CST power plant would provide up to 375 megawatts of parabolic trough solar thermal electrical generation with options for natural gas backup and/or thermal storage capabilities. The facility is expected to operate for approximately 30 years and would connect to the electrical grid at the existing Jojoba Substation using a newly constructed, 3-4 mile, 500 kilovolt tie-line. The transmission line and other related facilities that would be developed specifically for this project are covered in the DEIS analysis. Any required upgrades to the Jojoba Substation as a result of this project are also included in the DEIS analysis.

VMR was tasked with providing 1”=100’ topographic mapping, with 2’ contours, and digital orthophotography of the project area.  The project included acquisition of over 120 B/W aerial exposures for the stereoscopic feature collection and surface modeling.  VMR also produced a B/W orthophoto mosaic of the site with a .5’ pixel resolution.

Vertical Mapping Resources, Inc. is a full-service geospatial information firm providing traditional and digital photogrammetric mapping, as well as state-of-the-art geotechnologies, imaging and land information consulting services. We specialize in A/E design scale topographic and planimetric mapping, surface modeling, digital orthophotography, city and county GIS basemapping and updating services. VMR integrates cutting-edge hardware and software systems through each phase of the photogrammetric process to achieve an efficient, seamless production workflow.
