VERTICAL MAPPING RESOURCES PROVIDES MAPPING SERVICES FOR THE METRO GOLD LINE FOOTHILL EXTENSION
New mapping will provide framework for design of the new railway extension.

June 15th, 2010, San Diego, Calif. - Vertical Mapping Resources, Inc., a leading photogrammetric and geospatial land information firm with offices in both California and Arizona, was recently contracted to provide digital mapping and orthophotography services for the proposed Metro Gold Line Foothill Extension.

The Foothill Extension is 24-miles long and travels through 11 cities in addition to current operations in Los Angeles, South Pasadena and Pasadena.  The proposed project will be constructed in two segments; Phase 2A from East Pasadena through Azusa and Phase 2B, from Glendora to Montclair.    Phase 2A is fully funded through Measure R and will break ground in June 2010.

The Foothill Extension has received the backing of all 11 corridor cities issuing City Council resolutions of support.  The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority will integrate the Foothill Extension into existing Metro Rail service and oversee operation of the line once construction is complete.  A trip from Montclair to downtown Pasadena would take a little over 40 minutes; to Los Angeles would take approximately 75 minutes.  It is projected that trains will stop at stations every 10 minutes during rush hour and every 20 minutes during off-peak hours.  Each light rail car can carry 215 people (sitting and standing). The Metro Gold Line will be able to accommodate three-car trains.

The Gold Line Foothill Extension will connect historic downtowns revitalizing the established communities along the corridor; four historic depots are slated for renovation and incorporation into future stations.  The proposed extension will continue the Metro Gold Line from its current terminus in East Pasadena through the cities of Arcadia, Monrovia, Duarte, Irwindale, Azusa, Glendora, San Dimas, La Verne, Pomona, Claremont and Montclair.  It will offer shorter commuting trips, increased energy savings (estimated 1.5 million gallons of gasoline each year) and reduced levels of pollution (estimated 4 tons of carbon monoxide).

VMR was contracted to provide 1”=40’ topographic mapping and digital orthophotography of the entire length of the extension plus right-of-way.  The project included acquisition of color aerial photography for the stereoscopic feature collection and surface modeling.  VMR also produced a color orthophoto mosaic of the site with a .25’ pixel resolution.  CAD deliverables were provided in Metro Standards and Microstation format.  Also of note, this project was completed three full weeks ahead of schedule.
