VERTICAL MAPPING RESOURCES MAPS MAJOR BAY AREA INTERSTATE AS PART OF THE I-80 CORRIDOR MOBILITY PROJECT
20.5-Mile Digital Terrain Modeling & Design-Scale Topographic Mapping
Provide Detailed Look at Bay Area Transportation Project
Scottsdale, Arizona, August 18, 2008 – Vertical Mapping Resources Inc., a leading integrated aerial mapping and geospatial land information company, has been contracted to map a 20.5 mile section of Interstate 80, which runs from the Bay Bridge in Oakland, Calif., to the Carquinez Bridge in Crockett, Calif., as part of the I-80 Corridor Mobility (ICM) Project.
The I-80 corridor is one of the most congested corridors in the Bay Area. According to a Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) Monitoring Report, it has ranked as the worst congested corridor for the last six years. Freeway congestion along the corridor causes heavy commuter backup onto local roads, resulting in the longest commute duration in the Bay Area. These delays contribute to major social, economic and environmental problems: idling cars pollute the environment; clogged freeway lanes hinder goods and services transportation from the Port of Oakland and industrial areas in the East Bay; and emergency response times are dramatically increased in heavily congested areas. Additionally, varying traffic speeds and travel times contribute to a higher accident rate on I-80.
As part of the ICM Project, Vertical Mapping Resources has been contracted to provide design-scale topographic mapping for the heavily developed alignment. The topographic maps will provide those working on the ICM Project with a detailed look at the current conditions of I-80, including all on ramps, exit ramps and intersections.
“This is our second major Caltrans project this year,” said Bret Okraski, director of consulting and development for Vertical Mapping Resources. “Our team has worked effectively with Caltrans and other local and state transportation agencies in an effort to develop solutions to their mapping needs.”
The prime contractor and its team of engineers, surveyors and technicians have been engaged to build a comprehensive systems management project for the I-80 corridor to create a balanced, responsive and equitable system that will monitor and control traffic and improve the safety and mobility of the users, including transit customers. The proposed project elements include: corridor-wide adaptive ramp metering, ramp metering HOV bypass lanes for transit access, variable speed limit signs, closed-circuit television cameras, highway advisory radio and dynamic message signs and vehicle detection systems.
To create a stable traffic flow throughout the I-80 corridor, the Alameda County Congestion Management Agency (ACCMA) is working in collaboration with West Contra Costa Transportation Advisory Committee (WCCTAC), Contra Costa Transportation Authority (CCTA), Caltrans, Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC), local agencies and transit agencies in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties.
