VERTICAL MAPPING RESOURCES MAPS PROPOSED CALIFORNIA HIGH-SPEED RAIL ROUTE

Orthophotography and Topographic Map Will Help Engineers Study a Proposed 47-Mile Route from Los Angeles to Orange County

Dana Point, Calif., Nov. 5, 2008 – Vertical Mapping Resources Inc., a leading integrated aerial mapping and geospatial land information company in the Southwest, recently mapped the proposed California High‐Speed Rail route from Los Angeles to Orange County.

Currently in the planning stages, California High‐Speed Rail (CHSR) is a mass transit project designed to quickly move passengers throughout the vast state with 800 miles in routes extending from Sacramento to San Diego. High‐speed trains will be capable of maximum speeds of 220 miles per hour with an expected trip time from San Francisco to Los Angeles in 2 hours and 40 minutes. The system is forecast to potentially carry more than 100 million passengers per year by 2030.

High‐speed trains use one‐third the energy of airplanes and one‐fifth the energy of auto travel. According to the CHSR Authority, studies have demonstrated that the use of high‐speed trains in California will eliminate 12 billion pounds of greenhouse gas emissions each year by 2020, which is the equivalent of taking 1 million cars off the road.

All environmental, planning and engineering work is currently being performed by private firms under contract with the CHSR Authority. Vertical Mapping Resources (VMR) is part of a team aimed at completing the environmental studies and preliminary engineering work suitable for design/build project delivery.

VMR was contracted to provide topographic mapping for the proposed 47‐mile route from Los Angeles to Orange County. VMR provided black and white orthophotography and topographic mapping at a
1 inch=40 foot scale with 2‐foot contours. More than 220 photos were incorporated into the mapping process to ensure adequate coverage of the intricate project design.

“One of the most rewarding aspects of our work is providing mapping services that aid in the development of innovative and sustainable projects like California High‐Speed Rail,” said Joseph Bartorelli, president of Vertical Mapping Resources. “By analyzing detailed, precision maps today, project engineers will be able to determine the safest, most feasible locations for the infrastructure of the future.”

On Nov. 4, a $9.9 billion bond measure passed, which provides initial funding for the estimated $45 billion California High‐Speed Rail system.
